16th October 2004 - Marlene Lyng - Lambay Island

Paul kelly’s body of artist work, carried out on Lambay Island, off north Co. Dublin over the past two years, draws attention as much to the history and stories of the of the island as it does to his delicate portrayal in oils of the island landscape……On Lambay, the soft sea air encourages fuchsias to thrive profusely. The castle sits surrounded by an island of flowers there are also great stretches of purple heather. This is the material Kelly worked with a fairy castle on an enchanted island and he has done it justice with his portraits of Lambay castle, the 'Shamrock' ferry at the harbour, the bays, boathouse, cliffs, island chapel and gardens….

James Gorry at the Molesworth Street Gallery encouraged him to take a sabbatical and go to the island and paint 'pure landscape'. The result, says Gorry, is a 'comprehensive yet sensitive portrait of an island, Lambay.'
