Brian Fallon 1994 - Gorry Gallery

"This exhibition is a genuine surprise and eye-opener, it has seemed less and less likely that traditional, Academy style realism could yield much at this late stage, yet this 25 year old painter proves that given the elementary ability to handle a brush (much rarer than is generally thought) good pictures can still be painted which do not differ much in essence from those of 80 years ago.

Paul Kelly paints figures in orchards or gardens, old railway stations, fishing vessels in harbour, flowers etc and he does so with sensitivity and style……Kelly’s feeling for light, in fact is virtually his strongest point, particularly the wet, filtered light of Ireland. He is a “Tonalilst” rather than a colourist, but he has a sensibility to the warmer range of colours and at times a flair for broken tones.....

This is the kind of exhibition which should interest the RHA badly in need of young artist who can not only paint traditionally but – far rarer – paint well."
